TITLE: Associate Director
REPORTS TO: Executive Director
ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW:
Gay-Straight Alliance Network is a youth-led organization that empowers youth activists fighting homophobia and transphobia in schools through the establishment and support of Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) clubs in high schools and middle schools. GSA clubs provide support to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning and straight ally youth who are facing pervasive discrimination and harassment at school. GSA Network provides resources, training, and grassroots organizing support to clubs working to educate schools about LGBT issues and organize for social change. GSA Network currently runs a network of more than 415 Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) clubs in California. GSA Network has 5 full-time staff, 50 core youth leaders, and maintains offices in San Francisco, Fresno, and Los Angeles.POSITION SUMMARY:
The Associate Director is a new position at GSA Network. The position is an opportunity to provide leadership in a dynamic organization that is growing within California and beyond. The Associate Director will work closely with the Executive Director to manage and lead the organization in its next phase of development. Primary responsibilities of the Associate Director will be in program and staff management, individual donor fundraising, and communications. This is a perfect position for a committed, highly motivated, and detail-oriented individual who is interested in working in a fast-paced youth organization committed to social justice.RESPONSIBILITIES:
(These can be tailored somewhat to the strengths of the candidate selected.)Program Management Ensure that programs and activities of the organization are consistent with the mission, fulfill grant objectives, and meet community needs. Develop and manage program evaluation, tracking and reporting systems with staff. Work with Executive Director to develop long-range strategic and program plans.
Staff Management and Development Hire, train, and supervise program staff. Provide consistent coordination and leadership to staff across multiple offices. Oversee training and development of program staff.
Fundraising Implement fundraising activities including direct mail appeals, special events, donor cultivation, donor communications, and maintenance of donor database. As necessary, assist Executive Director and contract grant writer with foundation and corporate grant proposals and reports.
Communications Develop communications, marketing, and public relations plans, strategies, and messages with Executive Director. Produce and distribute organizationıs newsletters (printed and electronic). Oversee and update organizationıs web site. Develop and disseminate press releases and press packets, and work with community organizing staff to coordinate media strategies that mobilize constituents, educate policy makers, and inform the public. Act as spokesperson for the organization in the Executive Directorıs absence.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A strong candidate will possess most or all of the following qualifications:- A demonstrated passion for and commitment to social justice, anti-oppression work, LGBT rights, and youth empowerment.
- Knowledge of and direct experience with grassroots organizing and campaigns.
- 3-5 years experience with hiring, staff supervision, program development and evaluation, project management and fiscal oversight, preferably across multiple office sites.
- Excellent staff management and leadership skills, including ability to mentor, evaluate, and inspire staff.
- Strong project management skills: ability to multi-task, prioritize, follow through, and work well with a collegial team with high standards.
- Proven track record with individual donor fundraising, preferably including grassroots fundraising, direct mail, and special events.
- Familiar with FileMaker and preferably with ebase.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Independent worker and team player, initiative-taker, good problem-solver.
- Experience working with LGBTQ youth and ability to relate well to LGBTQ youth.
- Ability to work with people from a variety of different racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, educational, religious, sexual, and generational backgrounds.
SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION:
