Middle school was tougher on Taylor Kennepohl than it was on most.
Even before eighth grade, when she realized she was gay, she endured a barrage of anti-gay insults. They called her a litany of derogatory names meant to sting. It made her feel like a freak.
Today marked the first annual National Gay-Straight Alliance Day, and several of the groups across the country heard from Sen. Al Franken on his anti-discrimination bill's prospects of passing through Congress and bringing change to their schools.

DOWNEY – It is 2:30 on a Thursday afternoon and room S3 at Downey High School (DHS) is buzzing. The school day has already ended, but students keep filing into Mr. Zakour’s classroom, chitchatting with friends and enthusiastically plopping down into desks.
SANTA CRUZ -- A record number of local high school students attended Saturday's statewide Gay-Straight Alliance conference, which educators and students say reflects a growing interest in advocacy clubs for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students and their allies.
