Now, Harvey Milk has a holiday of sorts to call his own. California will observe its first day of "special significance" Saturday honoring the slain gay rights leader on what would have been his 80th birthday.
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- The first openly gay man to hold an elected office in California won't be honored on local high school campuses.
The Kern High School District Board of Trustees voted 3-1 Wednesday to not observe Harvey Milk Day on May 22.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed Harvey Milk Day into law Oct. 12 last year.
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- The Kern High School Board of Trustees has voted against commemorating the life of assassinated San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk.
A special meeting was held in the district's board room Wednesday morning, after board Vice President Ken Mettler proposed a policy that would prevent schools within the district from recognizing Milk in the classroom.
WASHINGTON, April 21 - Today, the nation's leading lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) organizations, along with allies in the faith, labor and civil rights communities, issued the following statement to members of the United States Congress:
"Pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act NOW."
The American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee and Lambda Legal said Monday they have received assurances that a student wearing T-shirts printed with pro-gay slogans won’t be censored. The school also will train staff on the anti-bullying policy to avoid harassment of any student.
Greenbrier High School in White House, Tenn. sent a student home Monday on the grounds that his “I (Heart) Lady Gay Gay” T-shirt caused a “disruption,” prompting allegations of a free-speech violation. The shirt refers to gay icon Lady Gaga.
